What is Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP)?

  • Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy, or KAP, is a safe, guided way to go deeper in therapy when talk therapy alone hasn’t been enough. Through my partnership with Journey Clinical, clients receive medical support and oversight alongside the therapeutic process.

Here’s how it works: Journey Clinical’s medical team handles the medical side—you’ll complete an intake, screening, and, if you’re eligible, receive ketamine in the form of sublingual lozenges. During dosing sessions, you’ll take the medicine in a safe, controlled setting while I guide the therapeutic part. Ketamine temporarily shifts how your brain communicates, which can open up new perspectives, ease emotional barriers, and allow for insights and breakthroughs that might otherwise feel out of reach.

In simple terms: KAP combines medicine and therapy to create the conditions for deeper healing and lasting change.

  • KAP is a structured process with several steps, so you’ll always know where we are in the journey:

    • Medical intake and clearance: You’ll first meet virtually with a clinician from Journey Clinical to review your health history and determine eligibility. If you’re a good fit, they’ll prescribe ketamine and provide you with clear medical guidance.

    • Preparation sessions: Before any dosing, we’ll meet to set intentions, discuss what to expect, and prepare you with grounding tools.

    • Dosing sessions: During a session, you’ll take your prescribed ketamine lozenge in a safe, supportive environment. The medicine often creates a relaxed, introspective state. I’ll be with you the entire time, guiding the process and helping you feel comfortable.

    • Integration sessions: After dosing, we’ll process what came up—thoughts, emotions, imagery—and connect those insights to your life. This is where lasting change happens: making meaning of the experience and applying it in practical ways.

Every step of the way, you’ll have both medical oversight (through Journey Clinical) and therapeutic support (through me), so the process feels safe, contained, and purposeful.

  • My role is to support you before, during, and after the ketamine experience so that it connects meaningfully to your goals. In preparation sessions, we’ll clarify your intentions and what you hope to get out of the work. During dosing, I’ll guide you through the process and help you feel safe, supported, and grounded. And in integration sessions, we’ll process what came up and translate those insights into real steps you can take in daily life.

    This approach can help you:

    • Access and work through stuck patterns of trauma, anxiety, or depression.

    • Break free from negative beliefs like “I’m not enough” that fuel shame or avoidance.

    • Experience relief from symptoms more quickly than traditional talk therapy alone.

    • Reconnect with yourself, your relationships, and your sense of purpose.

In short: KAP helps you move from simply coping to truly healing—and gives you tools and insight to create lasting change.

You’ve done everything “right,” and you’re still stuck. KAP helps us cut through the noise, meet the real you beneath the surface, and chart a path forward.

Questions?

FAQs

  • KAP is a therapeutic approach that combines the use of low-dose ketamine with psychotherapy. Ketamine can temporarily shift how the brain processes information, making it easier to access insights, reduce symptoms, and create space for breakthroughs. Partnering with Journey Clinical ensures the medical side is safe and supervised, while I guide the therapy process.

  • Ketamine increases neuroplasticity—your brain’s ability to form new connections—which can make therapy more effective. During a dosing session, ketamine can create a calm, reflective state. This allows us to work through difficult thoughts, emotions, and beliefs that may have felt “stuck” in traditional talk therapy.

  • Research shows KAP is especially effective for treatment-resistant depression, anxiety, PTSD, and trauma. It can also support people struggling with substance use, negative core beliefs (like “I’m not good enough”), or a general sense of feeling stuck despite trying other approaches.

  • Yes. Ketamine has been used safely in medicine for decades, and in low doses under medical supervision it is considered safe for most people. Through my partnership with Journey Clinical, all clients go through a thorough medical evaluation before beginning KAP.

  • During a dosing session, you may feel relaxed, introspective, or experience shifts in perception. Some people describe it as dreamlike or expansive. You remain aware and in control the entire time, and I am present to guide and support you. Afterward, we process what came up so you can make meaning of it.

  • KAP is a type of psychedelic-assisted therapy, but it uses ketamine, which is currently the only legal and widely available medicine of this kind in the U.S. Unlike recreational use, KAP is carefully guided and combined with therapy to ensure safety and integration.

  • Yes. Many clients choose to do KAP via telehealth, taking prescribed ketamine lozenges at home with virtual support. You will need a chaperone to be present in your home for the duration of your dosing session to ensure your safety and comfort. Virtual KAP sessions allow you to feel safe and comfortable in your home environment, which can help improve your experience.
